The extension and conversion of a 3 storey Georgian building, By Gort Scott Architects:

Practice director Sam Tisdall was project architect on this Mayfair building whilst working at Gort Scott architects, at the detailed design and early construction stages. The project involved retaining the front and rear façades of an historic building and inserting a completely new steel structure into the shell, allowing the existing layout which was convoluted and on different levels to be completely re-worked. The partial basement was excavated and a storey added to create an impressive double height space at the top of the building

A new stair to the rear of the building provides clear vertical circulation up to the top floors. The stairs are naturally lit by a large rooflight and set back from the walls leaving a slot which allows light to filter down to the lower levels. Due to the narrow plot width, the relocation of the stairs combined with a fire escape strategy through the basement, frees the front of the building at ground floor for a full width retail space which would otherwise have been very narrow. The building was carefully detailed throughout, with particular attention paid to incorporating air conditioning into the building without compromising the quality of the spaces.

The property was within a strict conservation area and all the changes were therefore subject to complex negotiations.
